Knee Pain When Bending

When you are experiencing knee pain when bending, you are not suffering alone. It is actually very common most especially for sports enthusiasts, professional athletes and elderly people. There is even a medical term for such condition and it is called patellofemoral pain syndrome.

The patellofemoral is the medical term to describe your kneecap, which is also called patella, and your thigh bone, which is also called femur. Medically speaking, when you are experiencing knee pain when bending, the pain is transmitted from your patella as it articulates to your femur.

The reason of such occurrence is mainly the application of excessive force or pressure to the kneecap-femur joint. Normally, this excessive force or pressure happens because of joint misalignment or a displaced kneecap. In time, you will develop knee pain when bending because the repetitive pressure affects the joint surface behind the joint.

The Causes of Knee Pain When Bending

As mentioned, the knee pain when bending or patellofemoral pain syndrome is commonly caused by misaligned patella. The misalignment can be due to an abnormality in the muscle balance or it can be attributed to poor biomechanical control.

A usual occurrence among athletes, sports that involve running, jumping and landing, or squatting requires extensive knee joint action which then opens a lot of risks for trauma and excessive force or pressure.

When you are experiencing knee pain when bending and the condition is left untreated, it can further developed into a more serious condition called patellar tendonitis.

The Symptoms of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

As it has been observed, the onset of the pain is actually gradual rather than being exposed to sudden trauma. The knee pain when bending can be felt as it slowly deteriorates from mild to severe throbbing.

This means that at first, you can feel the discomfort during extensive activities but later on you can feel the pain even when at rest.

Treatments for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

The effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention has been confirmed by researchers and medical professionals alike. It can be used to alleviate the symptoms as a short term  solution or it can be used to improve the over-all quality of the joint as a long-term goal.

For severe knee pain when bending cases, surgery is also being posed as one of the possible solutions. The procedure is done to repair the severely damaged or unrelieved arthritic joint surfaces.

The goal of every treatment, whether it is physical therapy rehabilitation or a surgical procedure, is to alleviate the onset of pain and inflammation first and most importantly, to normalize and stabilize the joints again.

It is also important to note the different phases or levels of physical function in order to monitor your progress with your rehabilitation. There is no specific time frame, although knowing the phases can make you understand the situation and it will later prevent any frustration from a perceived lack of improvement or development.

Just remember that the most important part of treating your knee pain when bending or your patellofemoral pain syndrome is a constant communication with your therapist and a positive attitude towards improvement.
